A retired integrative medicine specialist and anesthesiologist, Dr. Guth spent more than 40 years dedicated to helping patients. Making the decision to pursue anesthesiology, her nearest option to surgery as women weren’t often selected for surgical residency programs at that time, after many years of study, she eventually found herself enveloped in the study of pain management. Before retirement, she assisted in forming a pain clinic at her hospital after becoming a patient herself, hoping to assist others in learning all about health and integrative medicine.
Most recently, Dr. Guth had chaired the department of anesthesiology at the Mills-Peninsula Hospital System in California, where she first began her career in 1967. Since retiring from practice Dr. Guth has remained active in patient care and advocacy issues, promoting the integration of holistic concepts into teaching and medical practice. With her involvement and through a generous gift in 2002 toward the endowment of the Caryl J Guth, MD Chair for Integrative Medicine, Dr. Guth is honored to be considered the founder of the service. This visionary investment eventually led to the establishment of the Center for Integrative Medicine of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, officially designated in 2009. In 2017 the Integrative Medicine Patient Clinic was established to treat pain patients without opioids and other medical problems without drugs.
Dr. Guth’s career history also involved education. She was an instructor at the University of Nijmegan (now known as Radboud University) in the Netherlands, as well as at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. A diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, she was also known for having served on the board of directors for Mills Hospital in San Mateo, CA, and for Mills-Peninsula Health System in Burlingame. She was a member of the board of science and policy advisors for the American Council on Science and Health, and served in numerous roles for organizations, such as the American Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the California Medical Association, the California Society of Anesthesiologists, and the San Mateo County Medical Association.
When Dr. Guth first started out in medicine, she earned an Associate’s degree at Mars Hill College and a Bachelor of Science at Wake Forest University. By 1962, she had completed an MD, also at Wake Forest, before interning at The University of Kansas Medical Center. From 1963 to 1965, she completed her residency in anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, followed by postgraduate training in anesthesiology at Queen Victoria Hospital in Sussex, England, and at Stanford University back in the United States. From 1982 to 1983, she served as and was elected President of the 3,000-member California Society of Anesthesiologists and in 2005 was elected President of the Wake Forest Medical Alumni Association, which she served in this role until 2006.
In 2013, Dr. Guth was honored with a North Carolina Baptist Heritage Award by Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She also received a Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award by Mars Hill College in 2012, and was named Deacon Club Member of the Year by Wake Forest University in 2010. In 2016, she was granted with a Lifetime Membership on the Board of Visitors at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Furthermore, she received a Distinguished Service Award by Wake Forest Medical Alumni Association in 2010 and the California Society of Anesthesiology in 2006. During her college years, Dr. Guth was also honored with a Crisp-Casey Award by Wake Forest University for Best Female Athlete in 1957.
Dr. Guth has been included in more than 35 editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World. Caryl Guth, MD, is a former anesthesiologist who achieved success during her five-decade-long career in the field of healthcare. She concluded her California career having served as chair of the anesthesiology department at Mills-Peninsula Medical Group in San Mateo, Calif. Dr. Guth worked within the medical group and its hospitals since 1967, during which time she served as a member of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital board of directors. In her career, Dr. Guth also met with success as an instructor for Radboud University (formerly the University of Nijmegen) in the Netherlands, was an instructor at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, member of the board of science and policy advisors for the American Council on Science and Health, and a holistic and integrative medicine physician. In recognition of her professional excellence, Dr. Guth was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of American Women. In addition, she earned the North Carolina Baptist Heritage Award from the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and the Mars Hills University Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award. The Wake Forest University Deacon Club honored her in 2010 as Member of the Year. She also was presented the Distinguished Service Award of the Wake Forest Medical Alumni Association and the Distinguished Service Award of the California Society of Anesthesiologists. For both of these two latter organizations she had previously served as President. In preparation for her medical career, Dr. Guth earned an Associate of Arts in 1955 from Mars Hill Junior College, followed by a Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest University in 1957. The same year she won a Wake Forest trophy as the best women’s athlete. In 1962, she earned a Medical Doctorate from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. Thereafter, she completed an internship at the University of Kansas Medical Center, a residency in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and post-graduate training in anesthesiology at Queen Victoria Hospital in England and Stanford University. A diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Guth remained at the top of her field in her career through her professional affiliations and various political positions with the American Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the California Medical Association, the California Society of Anesthesiologists, the San Mateo County Medical Association, and the Wake Forest University Medical Alumni Association. She is considered the ‘founder’ of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Health and has been honored with the establishment of the Caryl J. Guth, MD Chair of Integrative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Health. The opening in 2017 of the new patient clinic of the Center for Integrative Medicine makes her retirement and move back to Winston-Salem, North Carolina raison d’etre.
